Registration deadlines are set by each state, not by the federal government. Some states allow same-day or Election Day registration; others require registering weeks ahead. Check your state election office for its exact deadline.

Each state and territory administers its own elections, including voter registration rules and deadlines. The National Mail Voter Registration Form can be used to register in every state except the handful that require their own state-specific form; it can also be used to update your registration after a name or address change, or to register with a political party. State-specific instructions are printed on the form itself and must be followed exactly.

  Follow the state-specific instructions on page 3 onward of the form, listed alphabetically by state. Sign it and mail it to your state or local election office.
