What this notice usually means
A Representative Payee Report asks how you spent or saved money for someone whose Social Security or SSI benefits you manage. A change in the law now exempts many family payees from filing this report each year. This covers a parent or legal guardian who lives with a minor child beneficiary. It also covers a parent who lives with a disabled adult beneficiary. It also covers a spouse who is the payee. If you fit one of these groups, you likely do not need to file. You must still keep records and show them to SSA if asked. Other payees still file each year. This includes payees who do not live with the beneficiary, plus friends and organizations. Not returning the report can lead SSA to pick a new payee or pay the beneficiary directly. SSA does not stop the beneficiary's payments just to get a payee to respond.
What to do now
- 1
Check whether you are exempt
You are likely exempt if you are a parent or legal guardian who lives with a minor beneficiary. You are also likely exempt if you are a parent who lives with a disabled adult beneficiary. The same is true if you are the beneficiary's spouse. If none of these fit you, you probably still need to file.
- 2
Keep records either way
Even exempt payees must keep records of how the money was spent or saved. Show these records to SSA if asked. Save receipts, bank statements, and notes on what the beneficiary needed.
- 3
Complete the report if SSA mailed you one
If you got a Representative Payee Report, fill it out and send it back. You can also complete it online if you are 18 or older with a my Social Security account.
- 4
Respond if SSA contacts you about a missing report
SSA tries to reach a payee by phone or mail before acting. Not responding can lead SSA to choose a new payee or start paying the beneficiary directly, so respond as soon as you can.
- 5
Call SSA with questions
Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) if you are not sure whether you must file, or ask a local legal aid group for free help.
