What this notice usually means
The IRMAA letter is Social Security notice about a higher Medicare premium. IRS income data raised your Part B or Part D cost. Social Security sets the amount and reviews any request to change it.
What to do now
- 1
Read the reason and the date on your letter
Your letter explains the income data used and the date of the decision. Read your own letter closely, since the numbers come from your tax return.
- 2
Check how much time you have to respond
Your letter states its own deadline to ask for a new determination. That date controls, not a general timeline described here.
- 3
Ask for a new determination if your income changed
Form SSA-44 asks Social Security to use newer income numbers. Use it after a life changing event, such as retirement.
- 4
Call Social Security or get free help
Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) with questions. A local benefits counselor can also help for free.
Plainly can build this list with you, using your own letter. Start with my letter
“20 days or more after issuing the pre-determination notice to new filers and attainers.”
