What this notice usually means
A CP75A notice means the IRS is auditing your tax return to check the Earned Income Credit, the dependents, and the filing status you claimed. It asks for documents proving each item under review. Being selected for this kind of audit does not mean you made an error or were dishonest. The notice and its enclosed forms explain exactly what to send for each item. Your own notice has the real reply date. The IRS decides the outcome of the audit.

“We're auditing your tax return and need documentation to verify the Earned Income Credit (EIC), dependents and filing status you claimed.”
“Complete the Response form by showing which items your supporting documentation addresses and return the form with the documents you are submitting”
“We'll disallow the audited items and send you an examination report showing the proposed changes to your tax return.”
“Having your return selected for examination doesn't suggest that you made an error or were dishonest.”
What to do now
- 1
Read the notice and every enclosed form
Each audited item has its own form. It explains exactly what proof the IRS wants.
- 2
Gather proof for your dependents and filing status
Gather proof for the Earned Income Credit rules. Also gather proof for each dependent and your filing status.
- 3
Complete the Response form
Show which item each document supports, then return the form along with your documents.
- 4
Send your response by fax or mail
Fax your documents to the number in your notice, or mail your response to the address on the Response form.
- 5
Know what happens if you cannot send the documents
The IRS can deny the items under audit. It will then send a report of the proposed changes.
