What this notice usually means
IRS Notice CP01 tells you the IRS verified your identity theft claim. The IRS placed an indicator on your tax account and will monitor it to help prevent future fraud. No action is required right now. Going forward, you will need an Identity Protection PIN, called an IP PIN, to file your tax returns.

What to do now

Keep filing your returns on time
The indicator does not stop you from filing, paying, or getting a refund. Just keep filing on time each year.

Use your IP PIN when you file
The IRS will send you a new 6 digit IP PIN each year. You will need to enter it on your federal return.

Request your IP PIN online if you want it sooner
You can request an IP PIN online instead of waiting for the mailed one, and you will retrieve it from your account each year.

Watch your other accounts too
Watch your bank and credit accounts for signs of fraud. You can report identity theft to the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov.
