What this notice usually means
USCIS ended the automatic extension for many EAD renewals. An EAD is your work permit card. This change started on October 30, 2025. Before that date, a timely renewal could extend your card. That extension lasted up to 540 days. It gave USCIS time to decide your case. If you filed on or after October 30, 2025, that automatic extension no longer applies in most cases. Your card now expires the day after its printed date. A specific law or notice can still say otherwise. New receipt notices no longer mention an automatic extension. This change does not touch an extension you already had from an earlier renewal.
What to do now
- 1
Check your filing date
Look at the date USCIS received your renewal application. That date decides whether the old 540 day extension can still apply to you.
- 2
Read your card's real expiration date
If you filed on or after October 30, 2025, your card expires the day after the date printed on it. There is no automatic extra time in most cases.
- 3
Watch your USCIS receipt notice
Notices issued on or after October 30, 2025 no longer list an automatic extension. If yours does not mention one, plan around your card's printed date.
- 4
Plan ahead for a gap in work authorization
If your renewal is still pending when your card expires, you may not be able to work until USCIS decides your case. Talk to your employer early.
- 5
Ask an immigration attorney or accredited representative about your category
Some cases follow different rules, like TPS. A helper can check your case.

If you filed on or after October 30, 2025, your EAD expires the day after its printed date. There is no automatic extra time. A pending renewal alone does not extend your work permit.
“This IFR does not impact the validity of EADs that were automatically extended prior to October 30, 2025 or which are otherwise automatically extended by law or Federal Register notice. DATES: This IFR is effective on October 30, 2025.”
