What this notice usually means
Public Service Loan Forgiveness, called PSLF, forgives a remaining loan balance after 120 qualifying payments made while working full time for a qualifying employer. The official PSLF form is how you certify that employment. You are encouraged to complete this form once a year, and any time you change employers or your hours change. This is a tracking practice, not a hard deadline with a set penalty. Skipping it does not erase progress you already made. The real risk is losing track of your count and finding an error too late to fix easily. Full time means working 30 or more hours a week on average, counting paid leave, no matter how your employer defines full time. A loan in default does not earn PSLF credit, even while you work for a qualifying employer. Qualifying employers include government agencies at any level and most nonprofits. For profit companies, partisan political groups, and labor unions do not qualify.
What to do now
- 1
Submit the PSLF form once a year
Complete the form yearly, and any time you change jobs or your full time or part time status changes. This keeps your payment count accurate.
- 2
Use the correct employer ID number
Search for your employer using the Employer Identification Number, or EIN, from box b of your W-2. A wrong EIN is the top reason people cannot find their employer.
- 3
Check that you meet the full time rule
Full time for PSLF means 30 or more hours a week on average, including paid leave. Volunteer time does not count.
- 4
Keep your loan out of default
A loan in default does not earn PSLF credit while it stays in default. Contact your servicer if a loan is behind on payments.
- 5
Stay on an income driven plan if that is your track
Most PSLF paths need an income driven plan and yearly income recertification. A lapse in recertification can move you off that plan.
