What it is

Mail in your old passport if it was issued after age 16 and within the last 15 years.

Passport book: $130. Passport card: $30. Book and card together: $160. Add $60 for expedited service (2-3 weeks), or add $23.36 more for 1-3 day return shipping.
Processing time
About 2 weeks from mailing until the application first shows status 'In Process'. Expedited service is 2-3 weeks total for an extra $60.
Renewal window
You can renew by mail only if your most recent passport was issued within the last 15 years.

What you need to know

You can renew by mail if all of these are true: your passport has never been reported lost or stolen; it was issued within the last 15 years; it was issued when you were age 16 or older and was valid for 10 years; it was issued in your current name (or you can provide a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing a legal name change); and it is not damaged beyond normal wear and tear. If any of these is not true, you must apply in person with Form DS-11 instead.

    Your most recent U.S. passport

    Mailed in with the application. It is returned separately, which can take up to 2 weeks after you receive your new passport.

    Legal name-change document, if your name changed

    A certified copy of a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court-ordered name change document. Returned in a separate mailing.

    One passport photo

    Stapled to the application with four staples, vertically, in the corners.

    Completed Form DS-82

    Print single-sided and sign and date it before mailing.
