Thrifty Food Plan

Also called: TFP

Last reviewed 2026-07-08

The Thrifty Food Plan is the government's estimate of the lowest cost of eating healthy. SNAP uses this figure to set how much each household gets.

The plan prices out a sample grocery list for a set household makeup, then adjusts for household size. The maximum SNAP allotment for a household of that size is tied to this figure. The plan is reviewed and updated from time to time, which can change SNAP amounts nationwide.

This word shows up in USDA reports about SNAP amounts, often shortened to TFP.
