Redetermination

Also called: Renewal, Recertification, Eligibility review, Annual review

Last reviewed 2026-07-08

A redetermination is a new check of your Medicaid or SSI case. A state agency does this to see if your benefits go on. It usually happens once a year.

The agency looks at your income and your household. It also looks at other facts it has on file. When all of it still matches, the agency may renew your coverage on its own. When something looks new, the agency asks you for fresh proof first.

This word shows up in Medicaid renewal letters and SSI review notices, often next to a deadline for sending proof back.

the eligibility of all Medicaid beneficiaries not described in paragraph (a)(2) of this section must be renewed once every 12 months, and no more frequently than once every 12 months.
